Out of Darkness
This shot is quite special to me. Its visually interesting, but also carries with it a strong personal memory. I traveled to Big Sur area in December 2014 and camped at this pull-off in my car for two nights. I was up and down the coast exploring by day, and at night retreated here to rest. I stared out to sea at the winter Milky Way, very bright in this low light pollution area North of Bixby Bridge. I was never disturbed or interrupted in my quiet contemplations, not always the case out on the road. After a very tumultuous year, it was exactly what I needed, and I can still hear the way the waves sounded under that black sky.
This image is made from two blended exposures - one to properly expose the sky, and for the second I light painted the foreground briefly with my flashlight while the cars came around the bend southbound on the infamous Pacific Coast Highway.
